FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 31, 1996--Flat Connections today announced Sumba, the first in a series of Flatware products designed to enhance the speed and security of Web-based communications.
Sumba includes an ISA-based Java processor, modem, Flatware API and Flatware Commlets that provide intelligence at the point of connection on the Internet.
Sumba provides a personal firewall that delivers strong encryption, highly secure e-mail and real-time virus checking for Internet communications. It includes Java processor-based software that splits the security and anti-virus processing tasks between the PC's CPU and the Java coprocessor. Sumba also includes the Java virtual machine, standard Java APIs and complies with Microsoft Corp.'s Cryptographic (CAPI 2.0) API.
As an embedded network computer, Sumba is ideal for individuals, corporations and software developers who require highly secure e-mail or on-line virus checking. In addition, the product allows users to deliver their own fast response time applications with strong encryption or other coprocessing functions at the point of connection.
Immediate applications include financial brokerage, electronic commerce, medical records and private communications, where information is downloaded from a network and, for security reasons, must remain memory resident in a safe, isolated, Java environment.
Highly secure e-mail is provided through seamless integration with Microsoft Corp.'s MS Exchange mail application using OLE extensions for delivering signed and encrypted messages. Strong encryption is provided using the BSAFE algorithms from RSA. Sumba supports user key lengths of up to 1024 bits, substantially enhancing standard cryptographic application delivery, which is supported under MS Internet Explorer 3.0 for shorter key lengths.
Sumba's coprocessor speeds the intensive work required to implement cryptographic algorithms such as Public Key Cryptography System (PKCS) with long key lengths, which might otherwise slow down the user's computer.
Included with Sumba is the Flatware API, which provides Windows '95 and Java language programmers the ability to develop Java Applets that access the Sumba coprocessor. An example of such an application is a financial or medical application that utilizes strong encryption through MS Internet Explorer 3.0 or through the programmers' own applications.
Sumba's valuable Java communications coprocessing features are delivered through the Flat Channels technology developed by Flat Connections Inc. Flat Channels enables application developers to choose amongst four information channel paths: 1) switching data transparently through to the PC; 2) inspecting and modifying a serial data stream; 3) inspecting and modifying data as a TCP/IP packet stream; or 4) providing peer-to-peer communications between Sumba and the PC.
The third and fourth channels give applications the ability to intercept HTTP and FTP data, providing capabilities such as security, anti-virus and customer features on the Java coprocessor.
Flat Connections will continue to enhance the value of Sumba with additional software that will be available to end users. This software includes Authentication for applications such as those provided in Secure Electronic Transactions (SET), and additional real time processing functions for the Internet.
Sumba's standard Java processor hardware is comprised of an NS486 packaged with 4 Mbytes of DRAM and 1 Mbyte of flash ROM. The flash ROM provides additional control and security to users and processing networks by providing a storage area for secure authentication keys which may be dynamically downloaded. Memory is upgradeable with industry standard SIMM modules.
Communications hardware includes a fully featured digital simultaneous 33.6 Kbps voice data (DSVD) modem and 14.4 Kbps Send and Receive Fax Caller ID and Distinctive Ring detect for Fax communications.
Flat Connections will demonstrate Sumba at Fall Comdex. It will be available in December directly from Flat Connections or its Value Added Resellers.
Flat Connections will license its software and hardware design through its FlatWorld Partner Program. This service oriented marketing program supports ISVs and VARs having a need for Sumba's embedded intelligence capabilities in their applications, devices and systems.
ISVs interested in fielding their applications in Sumba's secure and isolated environment, and VARs wanting enhanced performance and security will benefit from Flat Connections' strong technical support, specialized training, and co-marketing arrangements.
