Heart attack remains the biggest killer of Australians.
A new report shows that despite declining levels of heart disease for both men andwomen, it tops the list of causes of deaths for the 60th consecutive year.
A report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare into trends in deaths putheart attacks as the top cause of death in 1998.
It is followed by stroke, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bowelcancer, diabetes, suicide, breast cancer, prostate cancer and pneumonia.
Together, the top 10 killers account for 56 per cent of all deaths.
Heart attacks account for 22 per cent of all deaths, while strokes are responsiblefor 10 per cent.
As the third biggest killer, the rate of lung cancer has declined in men in the 10years to 1998 but for women it increased by 1.4 per cent per year in the same period.
