NSW: Employers banned from sacking crime victims
New proposed laws in New South Wales will stop employers from sacking victims of serious
crimes and their families while they attend court hearings.
The new laws will allow victims to take unpaid leave for as long as they require and
the Industrial Relations Commission will be granted new powers to force employers to reinstate
a sacked worker.
The move follows anecdotal evidence that victims in the past have been sacked after
taking days off work to attend court cases.
Premier BOB CARR, who announced the changes, says the new laws will ensure victims
receive the compassion they deserve.
